<image:caption>Instead, I went into the woods surrounding our home in the Catskill Mountains of New York and gathered some birch logs from the wood shed, greenery off the trees, pine cones off the ground. I bought some post-Thanksgiving cranberries on sale, as well as a bag of oranges. Some twine. Some needles. And some exciting finds at vintage stores, and my holiday decorating was complete, and also, oh, so very rewarding. Natural items bring a warm, rich feel to holiday decorating; it's a depth of comfort you cannot buy off the shelves.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Nutritious Bone Broth - After 24 hours, carefully remove the pot from the slow cooker and strain the broth so that all of the bones and vegetables can be discarded. Store the broth in mason jars. They can be kept in the refrigerator for several weeks, or freeze to keep longer. The fat in the broth will rise to the top in the refrigerator. This is completely normal. You can skim it off to use to cook with it, or keep it in the broth (which is what I do) for a boost of healthy, natural fats. Buon appetito!</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Nutritious Bone Broth - What to do: Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Chop all of the vegetables into large chunks. Lay the bones out on two sheet pans (use a third if you need to.) Lay the vegetable chunks around the bones. Drizzle the olive oil over the pans. Place the pans in the preheated oven and roast for 30 minutes. Give the bones and veggies a flip, then roast for another 20 to 30 minutes. Transfer the contents of the pans to a slow cooker. Add enough filtered water so that all of the bones and veggies are submerged. Add two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. Set the cooker to low and let simmer for 24 hours.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Sausage Stuffing - What to do: If your bread is so stale you can't slice it, run it under water, then place it in a 350 degree oven for a few minutes. Chop the bread into small chunks. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes at 225 degrees, so that it dries out. Alternatively, if you're more organized than me and plan ahead, you can leave it out overnight to dry. 2. Slice the sides of the chestnut shells. Place them in a pot covered with water and boil for 10 minutes. Remove the chestnuts from the pot and peel off the shell while their still hot, using gloves if you need to. Return to the pan, cover with the broth and cook for 20 minutes. Reserve the broth. Chop the chestnuts. 3. Preheat oven to 375°. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat, preferably a cast iron skillet, so that you can pop the whole pan into the oven when it's time. Add onions, celery, garlic, and sage; season with salt and pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, about 10 minutes. Add butter and broth reserved from the chestnuts, and cook, stirring occasionally. 4. Remove the casing from the sausage and saute the meat in a skillet until it is browned. 5. I f you're using a cast iron pan, simply add the bread, chestnuts, and sausage to the pan, as well as more broth. Sprinkle with parsley. If you're using a pan that can't transfer to the over, just place all the ingredients in a baking dish. 6. Cover with foil. Bake for 45 minutes. 7. Uncover and bake for 20 more minutes, until the top is crisp and browned. Buon appetito!</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Sausage Stuffing - I really don’t like to waste food. It happens, of course, but I try really hard to be mindful and use up everything one way or another.</image:title>
<image:caption>That leads me to get creative in the kitchen often times, which is certainly not a bad thing. This is a great recipe for stuffing for Thanksgiving or Christmas, or any other day of the year when you're looking for something hearty that also gives you some nutrition. If you use a sourdough einkorn based bread, as well as bone broth instead of regular broth, this really transforms into a nutritious dish.</image:caption>

<image:caption>With roots in New York and stints in San Francisco, Maui, London, Arizona, Austin and Nashville, Joanna Barbera’s wandering spirit shines through in her evocative folk tunes. Her interest in the ethereal and the divine, from religious studies and yoga to shamanism and energy-healing, has influenced her songs, which ask big questions about relationships, life, death and finding one’s place. Joanna made the move to Nashville in the summer of 2014, where she wrote and recorded her latest EP, IMAGO. The song “When the Rain Comes” landed a feature on CBS’s Criminal Minds, while a new single, a cover of Tom Petty’s “Breakdown,” was released soon after. Joanna followed the song’s arrival with a European tour alongside Deer Tick to close out the year. <image:title>Podcast - Arielle de Martinez</image:title>
<image:caption>Arielle de Martinez helps women all over the world free themselves from the industries that benefit from women not claiming their own autonomy, from the beauty industry that breeds insecurities and toxicity, the stylist/client power dynamics in the salon industry, and the allopathic systems that don’t seem to actually know how to truly be (and stay) well. With her guidance, women are healing their hair by using products they can make themselves at home with ingredients found in their garden and taking responsibility for the health of themselves and their families. Her “No Poo Method” has developed a cult following of women ditching the shampoo for good, and her course, “The Wild Mother’s Medicine Chest” has allowed women from all over the world to become the healers of their families. <image:caption>Shiva Rose was raised by bohemian parents in the countryside of Iran until the revolution occurred. Suddenly, a childhood nurtured on imagination and nature morphed into life as a refugee. Assimilating to a new life in America, she sought solace in old films, fashion and books, which led her to work as an actress in TV, film and theater. After having her first daughter in her early twenties she was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition, an occurrence that propelled her on a path as a naturalist and activist. She is the author of Whole Beauty, Daily Rituals and Natural Recipes for Lifelong Beauty and Wellness. She is also the creator of The Local Rose, a line of all-natural beauty products created with the utmost respect for the natural world and for you. <image:title>Podcast - Season 3 Wrap Up</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a solo episode where I look back on the conversations and guests of Season 3 and draw out the major tenets I came away with regarding this season’s theme, “Slow Down.” Slowing Down is not only about pace, but emotion, energy, the intention in movement, gracefulness, cooking, how we possess and use our power and emotions, and connecting to our ancestors. This episode is a kind of toolbox with some of the best tools I’ve learned to slow down and live more in the moment. Some guests and episodes I reference: Live to Create: Shele Jessee on Ranch Life, Textiles & Being Busy at a Slow Pace Sicily the Beautiful: Melissa Muller on Life in the Sicilian Countryside & Following Your Passion The Ache in Our Hearts: Thomas Lynch on Ancestral Homes & Old vs. New World Ways to Mourn They Converge in the Kitchen: Mallorie Vaudoise on food, herbs & cooking as sources of ancestral connection & inspiration The Graceful Way: Jennifer L. <image:caption>MaryBeth Bonfiglio’s dynamic and varied work is not simple to summarize. She is a writer, writing instructor and guide, an intuitive, a midwife, and a folk/root worker dedicated to exploring the ancient wisdom of her Sicilian heritage. Her Radici Siciliane gatherings, which attendees have described as “not a vacation, [but] a pilgrimage and a rite of passage and a week-long ritual,” take people to remote and traditional areas of Sicily to explore ancient folkway practices—such as tarot cards, ancient recipes, traditional dance and storytelling, cheesemaking, basket-weaving as well as creating a space for attendees to explore their own ancestral healing. She lives in Upstate NY, with her three daughters and longtime husband. <image:caption>Shawn Lang is a designer and one half of The Farmhouse Project. Along with his partner, Kris Prepelica, Shawn left the big city and decided to slow down and simplify by moving into a historic farmhouse in upstate New York. From there, their online brand, shop, design inspiration, and restoration of their 1800 farmhouse began. They describe themselves as “modern-day gents living the old-world way.” Today, their lives are filled with the things that bring joy: entertaining, cooking, gardening, and learning to live off the land. They also started a line of home goods, all unique and sustainably made. On any given day, you can find them working on a project in their onsite studio, putting the final touches on a room, gardening, feeding chickens, or dreaming up a new cocktail recipe. A self-described "plant-based permaculture homesteader" (she breaks that down in the episode!), she began homesteading in 2012 after suffering postpartum depression with her first child. Unhappy in the graphic design business she’d worked in for over a decade, she longed to be outdoors, aligning her lifestyle with the seasons and with nature. She started growing and preserving as much of her own homegrown produce as possible, and the homestead quickly grew from a home garden to a farm bustling with Clydesdales, geese and ducks for eggs, an apiary with ten beehives, sheep and a small orchard. She taps her own trees for maple syrup, creates her own soap and has even recently added a hobby vineyard for homemade wine. She is the co-author of “The Harvest Table: A Collection of Seasonal Plant-Based Recipes Inspired by the Home Garden,” as well as author of The Little Homesteader Series. She is co-host of “The Definitely Not Simple Life Podcast." <image:caption>Sara Dahmen is a coppersmith and the founder of House Copper cookware. When Sara was researching a historical fiction novel, she realized much of our kitchenware is no longer available as it once was and no one was making American copper designs. She created the House Copper American copper cookware line using historical references from original American coppersmiths. Not only does Sara hand-drill, rivet, hand-tin and polish each of her wares, but she also spends time with a tinsmith, where she works weekly with tools from the 1700 and 1800’s to recreate vintage reproductions of tin and copper and build custom copperware designs from scratch. She is the only female coppersmith working in the United States. She lives in Wisconsin with her husband and children on a micro farm. Things discussed in this episode: The benefits of cooking with copper, clay, and cast iron What's in modern-day cookware The origins of copper, clay, and cast iron as cookware Being the only female coppersmith in America Creating with your hands Creating a life that resonates with your values The importance of community Embracing your ancestral culture Resources: Dry Farm Wines: Use link dryfarmwines.com/bellafigura to receive a bottle for just a penny in your first order! What being out of touch with your intuition feels like. Learning to rest and to get back into our bodies. How motherhood opens up a new form of intuition. The art of mediumship. <image:caption>Mallorie Vaudoise, of Southern Italian ancestry, is a NYC-based spiritualist of Italian descent. With Vanessa Irena, she hosts Good Bones, a podcast about living and dying well. She is the author of Honoring Your Ancestors: A Guide to Ancestral Veneration and Italian Folk Magic, a blog about devotional practices from Southern Italy and Sicily. Drawn to witchcraft and folk magic from a young age, her path has required both careful study and wild abandon. Her writing is an act of devotion, an offering to the spiritual ecosystem in which she finds herself. She believes that music, food, wine, and kissing are vital tools of spiritual evolution. Things discussed: What ancestor veneration is and what it isn’t. How different cultures venerate their ancestors. Mallorie’s book, “Honoring Your Ancestors: A Guide to Ancestral Veneration.” How we repeat patterns from not only our own past, but the pasts' of our ancestors. Ancestor veneration can shine a light on these patterns to help release them. How to discern if a pattern is ancestral trauma. His collection of essays on point of view in fiction, The Art of Perspective, was published by Graywolf Press in 2016. He is currently on the faculty of the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference and the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College. Loosening the ties to our family stories in order to incorporate some of our own. How our respective cultures can be comforting and also suffocating. The beginning of our lives start with our ancestors’ stories. Writing our family stories as a way to redeem the loss of assimilation. Leaving behind the parts of our heritage that don't support us. <image:caption>This episode with therapist Marine Selenee, of French ancestry, who specializes in the practice of Family Constellations, dives deep into why we keep repeating destructive patterns, and how we can stop doing so by healing our family traumas—both our own and those of our ancestors. Things discussed: What is Family Constellations? How is it used to break damaging patterns? Your body remembers and guides you toward what needs healing. Trauma is passed down genetically through generations, and it appears as fears and phobias in descendants. The four principles to teach children in order for them to thrive. We all want to belong, and we’ll even take on bad habits—alcoholism, gambling— in order to feel we belong to our families. Our lives are entangled with our ancestors stories. All family members have a place, including those lost through miscarriage, and someone will repeat the story if those members are not recognized. <image:title>Podcast - MaryBeth Bonfiglio</image:title>
<image:caption>In this first episode, I take the plunge with the incomparable MaryBeth Bonfiglio, of Sicilian ancestry, whose dynamic and varied work is not simple to summarize. She's originally from Upstate New York, but lives in Portland, Oregon with her three daughters and longtime husband. Things discussed in this episode: How assimilation changes traditions and family life. Wanting to deny your heritage to fit in. Reclaiming your heritage and its traditions. Ancient customs can be reminders on how to live well and according to what matters most. Our ancestors' poverty forced them to focus on living well, on living in community, and enjoying the good moments of life, which is something we should remember. How having children brings out our need to return to our ancestral traditions. Rewriting stereotypes heaped upon cultures. Reading tarot cards as an ancestral connection. Doing work in our ancestral lands. Ancestral worship traditions as powerful tools. In modern pop culture, Buddha is cool, Jesus is not cool.; Yoga is cool, rosary is not cool, and how this can drive us away from our own culture's spiritual practices. The study of Epigenetics. Ways to reconnect with your culture and its traditions, even if you're generations removed from the first immigrant's source. <image:title>About</image:title>
<image:caption>Hey there, I'm Dolores! “Bella Figura” developed out of my years as co-host of The Italian American Podcast, the first podcast dedicated to helping Italian Americans celebrate their brilliant heritage. From the hundreds of conversations I've been fortunate to have with prominent guests, themes emerged—assimilation as a source of both success and sorrow, the spiritual pain created by disconnect from ancestral traditions, and the soul-level desire to live a life rooted in the truth of who you are and where you come from. I realized there's a deep need for people to connect to their roots, gaining strength, confidence, and boldness from this connection. Through conversations with some of the top voices in self help, wellness, and the arts, Bella Figura explores the ways we can tap into our heritage—whatever that heritage may be—to make our lives as beautiful as they can be. I'm a New York native who has spent more than two decades working as a writer, editor, and speaker. I recently served as Director of Italian Affairs for the Office of the Governor, State of New York. I've attended Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference and the Millay Colony for the Arts, been Artist in Residence at Byrdcliffe Arts Colony, and am a scholarship recipient of the Norman Mailer Center. Previous to the Governor’s Office, I served as a Senior Consultant at The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) in Washington, DC.</image:caption>
